Need to solve a problem? Simplify!

The problems in life and business that plague us most are often the simplest, most basic obstacles. No matter how we try to prevent them, we end up falling victim to them time and time again. No matter how simple to fix the problem may be, we tend to get so caught up in our problems that those simple, yet effective solutions often elude us.

Next time your business or personal life is interrupted by one of those bothersome little issues (things like clutter, disorganization, poor time management, etc.), simplify your thinking to come up with a solution that corrects the problem without creating more work for you.

Just like they say, necessity truly is the mother of invention. How many times have we heard the stories of inventors who saw a need, came up with an idea, got the patent, and got rich? More often than not, the ideas they came up with were deceptively simple. We probably caught ourselves thinking, “Why didn’t I think of that?”

The reason is that we’re conditioned to think critically, which often makes things more complicated than they need to be. If your problem is clutter, why not grab a few simple containers to throw things in and label them? Even a shoe box can make a great organization tool. If you think you have too much necessary “stuff” lying around, look for empty, wasted space in your home, office, or garage and think of ways to utilize it.

See how easy it is? Next time one of those everyday problems muddles up your home or business, look at how your 6-year-old solves a dilemma. You could even ask a kid for their ideas. The simpler the solution, the less work it creates for you. Overall, try to get back to basics and avoid making things harder than they need to be.
